Dear Missy

Dear Missy is a story about two women who are very close friends who run a design magazine together, and all their friends who stick together and support each other!

This show is so good and I ship Shen Siyi with Lu Ke a lot! I love their “broke up in childhood because Shen Siyi couldn’t handle a relationship, then Shen Siyi tried to make up as an adult but still couldn’t handle a relationship” dynamic. I love SSY’s whole broken relationship with her parents, and her self esteem issues / disaster bisexualness in general. That said, it would be really cool to receive a Guan Yue character study - she’s great & deserves it! An art / design / architecture feelings / aesthetic vid would also be a lot of fun. Or a vid for the gaggle of Nouveau employees just trying to get through the day.

DNW: Lu Ke / Cheng Nan without the breakup. Focus on police plotlines.

Vida (2018)

Two estranged sisters reconnect after their mother’s death - with each other, with their mother’s wife (they didn’t know about), and with the community they had left behind. I wish this show had gotten another season but I’m so glad that we got as much as we did!

A queer joy vid for this source would be so good; I’d also love a focus on either Lyn or Emma (or both of them together!) and the special ways they’re fucked up disasters and/or how they grow over the series. Alternately I’d love character studies for any of the other main / side characters (except Nelson Herrera).

Soulmate Adventure

A classic wuxia hero’s journey / coming of age story, very Shonen vibes, except both main characters (and many side characters!) are women. This is generally considered to be an F/F (baihe) story.

A vid about that dynamic between Feng Ling Er and Bai Yu Xiu would be so great to see in the world! I’d also enjoy a character study of either of them showing off their badassery or personality or growth. An aesthetic vid or vid about the wider Jianghu upheaval would also be fun. But really extra down for anything here!

Couple of Mirrors

An assassin and an author fall in love and run away together.

I just love Yan Wei / Xu You Yi so much! Sure there’s a little murder now and then, but they’ve got each other’s backs so hard. I’d really enjoy a ship vid for them, or a domestic slice of life vid, or a “they’re really good at their jobs” vid, or a character study for either of them… Also totally down for a vid about the toxic Xu You Yi / Zhang Wan dynamic. Or an aesthetic vid!

Lagaan

Fuck the caste system! Fuck the British! Victory via cricket! This was one of the first Bollywood movies I ever saw and remains my favorite.

A recruiter vid would be amazing but I’d also love a ship vid for Bhuvan / Gauri (or an OT3 with Elizabeth Russell) or a vid celebrating the Sports Anime of it all! DNW: Bhuvan / Elizabeth Russell (unless in the context of an OT3)

Babylon 5

Babylon 5 is a classic scifi series that takes an optimistic (but not utopian) stance on the future, centered around a particular space station and the folks who run it. We got a 1080p remaster a few years ago!

! I would love to have a vid for Talia/Ivanova, either a fixit or really anything. I’d enjoy a G’Kar / Molari vid, because their dynamic and progression over the course of the series is one of my favorite parts of the whole thing. I also love Lyta Alexander; a character study of her fucking shit up or anything else would be fun! Or a vid about any of the less focal characters. DNW: Strong focus on Sinclair, Sheridan, Garibaldi.

Ruri Rocks

This is a delightful show about two high school girls who befriend two female grad students and do research / rock hunting together! Science! Geology! Rocks!

I would love to have a vid that really celebrates the science aspects of the show! Or something about their friendships or their growth over the course of the series. Really, though, anything would be amazing!

Steerswoman Series

This is a great book series about a post-apocalyptic (???) world where wizards wield great power and one of the main checks on their power is the steerswomen, who use the scientific method and exchanges of truth to expand knowledge.

Honestly I would be delighted by anything for this. Personally I ship Bel/Rowan, so something for them would be neat. Something focused on Rowan’s investigation of the falling star would be neat! Or just a general aesthetic vid.

Short films directed by Liu Yun Rui

Liu Yun Rui has directed a number of wlw short films that are beautifully produced and really try to push the limits of what they’re allowed to show under censorship. It would be so cool to see a tribute to them - shippy fluff, aesthetic, whatever. Context post by douqi; list of wlw short films; TheMovieDB; another douqi post.

I did a presentation at VidUKon 2025: What the heck can you do with masks and tracking? It's a technical presentation about various techniques from color correction to changing what's shown on a TV and how they can help solve problems in your vids. The examples are in DaVinci Resolve but I believe they should be possible to do in other standard editors as well!

Below are some notes about the specific fandoms I'm requesting. For each fandom I've tried to give some ideas of vids I might be particularly interested in - but if there's something else you're excited to make, go for it!

Dear Missy: One of my favorite series at the moment. It’s just really well put together in terms of the writing, pacing, costume and set design, just all great! It’s a story about two women who are very close friends who reconnect and run a design magazine together. It’s also a story about a friends group who stick together through thick and thin - even if they date and break up. It’s also a story about unrealistically attractive people with unrealistically nice apartments in a super expensive city. It would be really cool to receive a Guan Yue character study - she’s great & deserves it! An art / design / architecture feelings / aesthetic vid would also be a lot of fun. Or a vid for the gaggle of Nouveau employees just trying to get through the day. And I can never get enough of SSY being a bisexual disaster and learning to be a better person. Lu Ke / Shen Si Yi is of course a delightful ship, and I would be totally down for a vid for them, either just them or poly or including some of the Dudes Along The Way. DNW: Lu Ke / Cheng Nan without the breakup. Focus on police plotlines.

ダンジョン飯 | Dungeon Meshi | Delicious in Dungeon (Anime 2024): I cannot get enough of how Marcille’s feelings for Falin are definitely Completely Platonic and everything is Very Chill. I would love to have a cute ship vid or a “powerful sorceress tears apart reality for her girlfriend” vid or really anything for them! I would also really enjoy just a Marcille character study about her path studying magic and her fear of friends and family dying before her. Alternatively, ensemble cooking or dungeon hijinks, for any of the groups or for the overall ensemble!

风声丨The Message (TV): This is a Republican-era (1942?) spy cdrama with lots of competence, spy shenanigans, and unreliable narration. Oh My God Gu Xiaomeng and Li Ningyu are so fucking in love it’s ridiculous. And I love how much competence they get to display in this show! I would love to receive a vid about their rivals-to-lovers-to-avenging-widow story! Or about their spy teamwork! I would also enjoy character studies of either of them, for example an examination of Gu Xiaomeng’s whole “I killed a lion and I can kill you too” vibe or Li Ningyu’s “you saw me do it but you’ll never be able to prove it, even to yourself” plotting. I think a vid examining Wu Zhiguo’s devotion / life debt towards Li Ningyu could also be interesting. I also really enjoyed the unreliable narrative structure of the show - a vid exploring that could be super fun! DNW: Wu Zhiguo / Li Ningyu (though one-sided pining from Wu Zhiguo -> Li Ningyu would be fine).

The Court Jester: Very silly movie relying on a lot of physical comedy. Every time I watch it I’m amazed at how well it’s held up! It would be great to have a vid for it - a summary or recruiter vid, or something just capturing the physical comedy and general madcap vibe. I’d be fine with something using diagetic audio here, since the way the script is written is so important to the comedy of the movie (and so different than what we get today!)

Oxygen Not Included: This is a video game about coordinating clones (who do exactly what you said but not necessarily exactly what you want) to set up shop on an asteroid (which is actually maybe a postapocalyptic remnant of Earth?) It would be super fun to have a vid for this! I’m really down for whatever you can pull off. Duplicants deal with bad things happening and die in comedic ways? Sure! “Plot” summary? Yeah! Celebration of Science? Woohoo! It turns out that in addition to gameplay there’s also a series of

animated shorts for this source!

Lagaan: This was one of the first Bollywood movies I ever saw and remains my favorite. I would love to have a vid for it! Babylon 5: I really appreciate Babylon 5 as a less utopian view of the future than TNG; it basically feels like they took (more or less) 90s geopolitics and set it directly into space. They also take care, when there’s a war, that it’s not an abstract thing happening offscreen - they show the cost of it. And now we have high-quality footage available! I would really love to have a fixit vid for Talia/Ivanova, since that relationship got treated so badly by the showrunners. I’d also really enjoy a G’Kar / Molari vid, because their dynamic and progression over the course of the series is one of my favorite parts of the whole thing. A general “space politics and things exploding” vid would also be enjoyable, or a Lyta Alexander Fucks Shit Up vid, or a vid about any of the less focal characters. She Makes My Heart Flutter: This is a delightful Korean web series romcom set in a lesbian-owned coffee shop with an all-women cast. A ship vid for the main pairing would be great; a vid about the younger generation of lesbians would also be super fun. But really I’d take anything! This was a delightful show and deserves to have vids!

Cutthroat Kitchen: I would love to see a Taskmaster-style vid for this kinky AF show. Food porn or wacky kitchen hijinks could also be fun!

Who Rules the World: Bai Fengxi and and Feng Qiwu are so great in this show! I would love to see a vid focused on either of them! (Or shipping them!) I love how Bai Fengxi basically flirts with everybody in this show regardless of gender and a vid celebrating that would be amazing. A constructed reality summary or trailer that made it look like Bai Fengxi was the main character for the entire show would also be a lot of fun. DNW: Strong focus on Hei Fengxi.

Keep your hands off Eizoken!: This is a charming anime about a group of friends making anime together. I would love a vid celebrating creativity & creation, or one that really gets into the meta aspect of examining the creation process that was used to create the thing you’re watching, or one about friendship, or one about Kanamori ruthlessly seizing control of the entire school. DNW: Shipping.

Under the Christmas Tree: This was such a cute fluffy F/F Christmas romcom and it doesn’t have any vids yet and it should!

I can't find a good rundown of how to get started with python / command-line tools that I like / that is as thorough as I would like, so I'm putting one together here. This is mostly a list of links to other guides / documentation that I happen to like, with some commentary. This is aimed at folks who have never used a python / command-line tool before, or who want to know more about managing python versions or environments (for example for tool development.)

Why use command line tools?

Command-line tools are cool because they are often free to install and use (without the need for weird ads or sketchy websites) and (if it's your thing) they're also the easiest type of program to create to solve problems in your life (because they don't require a graphical user interface or running a website / server).

Here are a few python / command-line tools I use frequently:

youtube-dl (or the fork, yt-dlp): For archiving videos.
srt, for quickly correcting timing on subtitle files
cleancredits, for removing text overlays from video clips
ffmpeg, for handling all kinds of video manipulation and conversion

Intros to the command line

1. https://tutorial.djangogirls.org/en/intro_to_command_line/ This is my favorite guide on how to use a command line. It's part of a larger tutorial about making a website with python but the page stands on its own as a solid intro to the command line.

3. Windows users might find something like WSL2 useful, which lets you have a linux-like command-line experience on windows... some command-line programs may work better or only be available in linux.

Installing Python command-line tools

The easiest way to install Python command-line tools is pipx, a package manager for python applications.

On Mac OS, you will need to install homebrew first, which is a general-purpose package manager that you can use to install pipx.

If all you want is to install and run Python command-line tools you can probably stop here!

Python version management

However, sometimes it can be useful to have more than one version of python available - for example, some programs might require different versions of Python from each other. My preferred tool for python version management is pyenv. The README has pretty comprehensive information about how it works and how to deal with any issues that come up, which I appreciate.

Isolated Python environments

Isolated Python environments let you install your dependencies and know those are the only dependencies installed. This means that:

You can know that those are the only dependencies that other users of the program would need.
You can know that the results will be the same even if you install the same code on a different computer - for example, if you set up automated tests on GitHub.
You can avoid problems if multiple programs are installed that have conflicting dependency requirements.

pipx manages isolated environments in the background to implement its package installation.

You can also manage isolated environments manually. They are generally called "virtual environments".

This guide for using virtual environments is pretty good: https://docs.python-guide.org/dev/virtualenvs/#lower-level-virtualenv My one caution would be that the guide is very pro-Pipenv, which is a different tool for managing isolated / repeatable environments. However, in my experience, it doesn't add much compared to a virtual environment and complicates things significantly. But the advice on how to use virtualenv is solid.

He takes much delight in their adversity. Something celebrating how kinky this all is would be fun! Alternately, food-porn could be fun, or wacky kitchen hijinks.

Dark Matter: Classic cyberpunk space found family fighting against the evil corporations who are literally the government. I love the found family vibes of this show - a vid celebrating that would be delightful. Something anti-capitalist would be neat - maybe a labor song cover? An action-y vid or SPAAAACE vid would also be fun! Or a focus on Android (shipped with Portia (and/or Two) or character study) - I love sentient robots who have so many FEELINGS <3 DNW: focus on Five or shipping Five with anyone.

Exandria Unlimited: Calamity: This was such an evocative short series by Critical Role - it’s set towards the end of the Age of Arcanum, so it’s all about the height of magic, the hubris of wizards, and the (literal) fall of the mageocracy - and about the people who actually get shit done (who are also still part of the problem) saving as many people as they can. I would love to receive a vid for it - whether that’s a constructed reality vid or an animatic vid (i.e. similar to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDMSHgQY5rM). A character study of any of them would be great (though I have a particular fondness for Architect Arcane Laerryn Coramar-Seelie and Cerrit Agrupnin, Guardian of the Seventh.) I would also enjoy an aesthetic vid (cool magic vibes! Floating cities! End of the world!) or an ensemble vid - but really, I would be delighted to receive anything. I am fine with any video or art sources being used to construct this vid - fan-made or otherwise. DNW: vid of the players as real people - due to the structure of Critical Role I think this likely means that footage from the show itself will not be usable since even in-character moments generally read visually as player interactions when put in a vid.

Love and Leashes: It was so great to see a mainstream source that felt like it was actually in some way related to the reality of BDSM (that is, showing that it involves respecting the other person’s desires and boundaries, and is not necessarily sexual). I really enjoyed the thoughtfulness and care that Jung Ji-woo puts into researching and preparing for her role as a domme. I would love a vid specifically celebrating that, and/or her learning about her own kinky nature. Also totally down for a ship vid and/or a horny vibes vid. Sleep With Me: ahhh the chill nighttime vibes of this are delightful. A nighttime aesthetic vid would be super cool, or just a ship vid for Harry and Luna, or a character study for either of them. A vid for Wendy would be neat but I’m not sure there’s enough footage for that to be practical - though maybe Luna & Wendy would work? A bit more out there - a constructed reality where Luna is literally a vampire could be so fun! DNW: Luna / Wendy.

Ted Lasso: I would really love to receive a Ted/Trent vid for this fandom. They’re such a delightful pair! I doubt the show is going there but it would be nice to have a vid. Relatedly, I crave Roy/Keeley/Jamie OT3 vid content. I wasn’t expecting to ship it but turns out, sure do! I would also love to receive a character study of Sam, Roy, or Keeley. Or, an ensemble vid focused on the townsfolk (not the team). DNW: Ted/Rebecca.

Wheel of Time: This show really captured what I loved about the books when I first read them - epic fantasy vibes, post-apocalypse magic - and made a number of really thoughtful improvements in the adaptation. I would love to receive an aesthetic vid for either the magic or the landscapes! Alternately, character studies of Nynaeve, Egwene, Perrin, Mat, Thom, Moiraine, Siuan, or Alanna Mosvani. For ship vids - my preference would be Nynaeve / Lan, Moiraine / Siuan, or Alanna and her warders. I would also enjoy a Two Rivers ensemble vid, or a White Tower politics vid. DNW: Rand character study, Rand / Egwene.

Baba is You: This is a cute puzzle solving game with a rabbit. To be honest I have no idea what a vid for this might look like, but the game is adorable and it would be really cool to see what you might come up with!

Babylon 5: I really appreciate Babylon 5 as a less utopian view of the future than TNG; it would be great to have better vids for it, especially now that we have high-quality footage available! I would really love to have a fixit vid for Talia/Ivanova, since that relationship got treated so badly by the showrunners. I’d also really enjoy a G’Kar / Molari vid, because their dynamic and progression over the course of the series is one of my favorite parts of the whole thing. A general “space politics and things exploding” vid would also be enjoyable, or a Lyta Alexander Fucks Shit Up vid, or a vid about any of the less focal characters. DNW: Strong focus on Sinclair, Sheridan, Garibaldi.

Critical Role - The Nordverse: I really love what Sam Riegal has done here - it leans so hard into the unrealistic / ridiculous portrayals of hackers in media, and has an extremely 80s vibe to me. I would love to receive a vid that takes this content extremely seriously, or a vid that takes it exactly as seriously as it takes itself.

Cutthroat Kitchen: Alton Brown is one kinky dude in this show; something celebrating that would be fun! Alternately, food-porn could be fun, or wacky kitchen hijinks.

Dark Matter: Something anti-capitalist would be neat - maybe a labor song cover? An action-y vid or SPAAAACE vid would also be fun! Or something about Android (shipped with Portia or character study). DNW: focus on Five or shipping Five with anyone.

Keep your hands off Eizoken!: This is a charming anime about a group of friends making anime together. I would love a vid celebrating creativity & creation, or one that really gets into the meta aspect of examining the creation process that was used to create the thing you’re watching, or one about friendship, or one about Kanamori ruthlessly seizing control of the entire school. DNW: Shipping.

Legend of Fei: My top wish for this fandom would probably be for an OT3 vid: Zhou Fei/Xie Yun/Wu Chuchu, Li Zheng/Ji Yunchen/Lady Nishang, and/or Li Yan/Ying Hecong/Yang Jin. Personally I ship Zhou Fei/Wu Chuchu even without Xie Yun being involved and that would be a lot of fun to see. I would also really enjoy a “Chuchu becomes a bard” vid celebrating her journey from child of a noble family to most sought-after documenter of sect martial arts. This show also has some of the most interesting fight choreography I’ve seen and I think a vid celebrating that could be really fun. DNW: Zhou Fei/Xie Yun.

Wotakoi: This show had so many points where I recognized myself and my friends and acquaintances - the way that they each have their separate niche interests and connect with each other around that. A vid celebrating that could be really fun. I would also totally love an extremely shippy / thirsty OT4 vid! Or a vid focused on Naoya Nifuji and/or Kō Sakuragi (shippy or not.) I really love Rowan’s way of looking at the world, in a constant state of awareness, learning, and discovery, as well as her commitment to the principles of the Steerswomen - i.e. never telling a lie. I appreciate Bel’s intelligence, as well, and her deep knowledge of the Outskirters, and the way that she is protective of Rowan when Rowan is being reckless in pursuit of knowledge. (I also enjoy when Rowan has to protect Bel from something and Bel is all flummoxed!) I love how they appreciate each other’s strengths, even if they don’t fully understand them, and even when they disagree. They would go to the ends of the earth for each other! <3

It would be great to have some Bel/Rowan! Investigating a new part of the world, or learning about advanced technology together. Maybe with kissing & sex? A missing scene or storyline during book four or post-canon could be fun - going back to the demon people, or learning more about how to use computers, or organizing the steerswomen to uncover some piece of information, or working to secure the Steerswomen’s legacy from the wizards. If you want to write an in-world epistolary/meta/journalism story - either Steerswoman reports, or local news, or people’s private journals recording their interactions with Bel and Rowan – I think that could be really fun!

If you want to do an AU, I could go for something set on present Earth or a sci-fi future where Rowan is a librarian or scientist or similar investigating something and Bel is some kind of outsider (haha) like a criminal or spy or something who gloms onto Rowan and then plot happens. I didn't want this but then I saw this Critical Role fanart and now I apparently am having feelings about that idea and wouldn't mind it being Rowan/Bel instead of Beau/Yasha.

Additional DNWs: Death of Bel or Rowan. Bel/Rowan breakup or infidelity (ethical polyamory is okay). 2nd POV.

I would really love to have some competence-porn of Cithrin being a fucking badass banker and outmaneuvering people. Magistra Isadau could be present as a mentor, or not. This could be in the form of global trade negotiations/politics or just a single city or a single business - either meticulously planned out in advance or working on the fly. Maybe details on the rollout of paper currency?

Alternately I would enjoy a slice of life of Cithrin just having nice things happen - going to the market, interacting with friends, having a healthy relationship - a typical in-canon or post-canon day when nothing earth-shattering is happening.

Alternately or additionally, it could be really fun to see an outside perspective on her - journalistic or spy reporting on her actions, personal journals from people who interacted with her, that kind of thing.

Canon divergence would be fine with me.

The worldbuilding source for Talos Principle is very limited:

I enjoy that Alexandra Drennan a thoughtful, intelligent scientist who, in the middle of an apocalypse, realized that there was no way to save humanity, and that the only hope would be to create a successor.

I would really enjoy competence-porn about the scientific / AI design process for creating the Talos project. If you wanted to write a fic that led right up to the moment of her death and her thought process as she closes her eyes for the last time, that would be fine with me! Or a slice of life in the bunker. Or a story about the team of people who start out disagreeing, but under her leadership they come together to work fervently on this project even as they die off one by one. It could also be fun to get a broader look at what was happening in the world during this time.

Alternately / additionally, a story about the main character of the game emerging from the simulation and discovering the outside world (2nd or 3rd POV) could be fun, as long as it was still focused around / interwoven with Alexandra Drennan in some way.
